Biden's "predominant symptom now is sore throat," Dr. Kevin O'Connor writes, which he ascribes as likely due to "lymphoid activation as his body clears the virus," calling the development "encouraging." Other symptoms, including rhinorrhea (runny noise) cough, and body aches "have diminished considerably," O'Connor said, while pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and temperature all remain normal.

Physician to the President Dr. Kevin O’Connor provided an update on Joe Biden’s condition Saturday, about 48 hours after the 79-year-old Commander in Chief tested positive for Covid. In addition to previously noted symptoms of a dry cough, runny nose and fatigue, O’Connor indicated in a letter released today that Biden also has a sore throat and body aches, two common symptoms of the virus.

The White House physician indicated that Biden was most likely hit by the BA.5 variant driving cases across the nation. He also said that the president is taking Paxlovid.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that Biden was experiencing “very mild symptoms,” and his personal physician said they included a dry cough, runny nose and fatigue. Biden is isolating and his schedule of events in Pennsylvania on Thursday were canceled.

“Because the president is fully vaccinated and double boosted, his risk of serious illness is dramatically lower,” Dr. Ashish Jha, who is leading the administration’s Covid response, told reporters. He said that risk is further diminished by Biden’s treatment with the antiviral drug Paxlovid.

He said that they do not know yet what kind of Covid variant Biden has, but testing is being done. Biden is being monitored for symptoms and his oxygen level is normal. He indicated that Biden would be isolating for five days and could return to public events when he tests negative.

A number of reporters were wearing masks in the briefing room, even though they are no longer required.

When a reporter asked where Biden was when he was infected, Jean-Pierre said, “I don’t think that matters. What matters is we prepared for this moment.” Jean-Pierre and Jha tried to put Biden’s diagnosis into the larger context of the administration’s progress in battling the Covid epidemic, as they noted that vaccinations have greatly reduced the risk of serious illness and hospitalization. But reporters continued to press on the question of how Biden contracted the virus.

Biden’s positive diagnosis may underscore the highly infectious nature of the latest Covid variant, although it is unclear what strand of the virus he may have contracted.

The White House has been particularly cautious about testing those who are in close contact with Biden. Still, the president has kept a very public schedule that includes public events, at the White House and elsewhere. He had planned to travel to Pennsylvania today for a speech on the new gun safety law and to attend a fundraiser.

He is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and experiencing very mild symptoms. He has begun taking Paxlovid. The press secretary said that they will provide a daily update on Biden’s status, while the medical unit will inform the president’s close contacts of his positive case.

“The President’s last previous test for COVID was Tuesday, when he had a negative test result,” Jean-Pierre said.

“Every day you are making risk assessments about whether you are exposing yourself or not,” Psaki said. “He got that extra booster. President Joe Biden seems to be handling COVID pretty well. At 79 he’s in a high-risk age group, but he’s also fully vaxxed and boosted — which drastically reduces the odds for serious illness.

We wish the president a rapid recovery. So far, it looks like his case is high-profile evidence that the pandemic is completely over — that Americans’ anti-coronavirus efforts should focus exclusively on getting jabs to those who need them and treating cases as they pop up.

That means absolutely no mandates — not for mass masking and so on, and not even for vaccination (except perhaps for special cases such as those who care for the elderly).

Yet clickbait-hungry media keep promoting health-care professionals who urge the nation to behave like it’s still early 2020 — ignoring not just the fact that the virus has become a background threat like so many others, but everything we’ve learned about what works and what doesn’t.

Some officials act on this madness: San Diego and Cedar Rapids schools have mask mandates back; Los Angeles is close to ordering public indoor masking. Federal health authorities are recommending under-12s get jabbed even though actual scientists are quitting in droves in protest, because the advice lacks any scientific basis.

Heck, Gov. Kathy Hochul is still ordering mass-transit commuters to mask — but noncompliance looks to be over 50% and rising, judging by our subway rides, so the gov is only breeding public contempt for health mandates.

One more time: Broad COVID mandates and restrictions are worse than useless; areas that went hog-wild with them had health outcomes no better than ones that did next to nothing — and far worse economic and social outcomes.

Case rates no longer mean a darn thing. Even hospitalization rates mean little if they include people hospitalized with COVID on top of smaller numbers hospitalized because of it. Death rates may be a lagging indicator, but if they never rise than there is no real problem.

(Oh, and why exactly has the city Health Department stopped breaking down results by vaxxed vs. unvaxxed? It says the data’s not clean enough, but you have to suspect our panic-pushing health czar fears people will draw the “wrong” conclusions form the more complete info.)

Look: Time, resources and energy wasted out of foolish panic can’t be spent on issues that are actually far more important.

Evolutionary forces mean new variants tend to be more contagious but also less toxic. In some form the coronavirus will be with us forever, but only as an endemic risk.
