Conspiracy Theory Movie Synopsis
Jerry Fletcher (Mel Gibson), a taxi driver in New York City who is also a conspiracy theorist, constantly brings up his ideas to Alice Sutton (Julia Roberts), a lawyer at the US Department of Justice. She is friendly to him because Jerry once saved her from a robbery, but doesn't realize that Jerry is spying on her in her home.
Her own job is to solve the mystery of her father's murder. Seeing suspicious activity everywhere, Jerry identifies several men as CIA workers, follows them into a building, and is eventually arrested. The interrogator injects LSD into Jerry's body and interrogates him under torture.
Jerry experiences horrific hallucinations and flashbacks, panics, and manages to escape by immobilizing the interrogator by biting his nose and kicking him.
Later, after being captured again, Jerry is tied with handcuffs to a hospital bed and forced to fall asleep due to the effects of the drugs. Alice visits Jerry, and Jerry manages to convince her to exchange his medical records with the prisoner in the bed next to him or he will die the next morning. When Alice returns the next day, the prisoner has died, allegedly of a heart attack.
The CIA, FBI, and other agencies are there, led by CIA psychiatrist Dr. Jonas whose nose is bandaged. Meanwhile, Jerry pretends to have a heart attack and, with Alice's help, escapes again. While Alice and FBI Agent Lowry are going through Jerry's personal belongings, the CIA arrives and confiscates everything. She refuses Lowry's offer to cooperate with him, and returns to her car to find Jerry hiding in the back seat.
They leave the hospital and, on the way to Jerry's apartment, Jerry explains that someone is likely following him. Trying to avoid a car chase, Alice changes lanes and stops, discovering that the person is Lowry; she convinces him to leave her alone until she has more information to give and Lowry leaves. They break into Jerry's highly secure apartment, where Jerry tells her about the conspiracy newsletter he created.
Just as Alice is almost convinced that Jerry is crazy, a SWAT team breaks in. Jerry burns everything and they leave through his elaborate secret exit. In the room below, there is a large painting on the wall featuring both Alice on her horse and the three chimneys of the Ravenswood Power Plant. When Jerry's apartment catches fire, Jerry and Alice escape, with Jerry posing as a firefighter to avoid suspicion.
They go to Alice's apartment, where Jerry accidentally reveals that he has been spying on Alice. Hearing this, Alice throws him out. On the streets below, Jerry confronts Lowry and his partner who are spying on Alice's place, and he warns them with a gun not to hurt Alice. After being chased into a bookstore, Jerry sees the agents rappel from a black helicopter and hide inside the theater, escaping by causing panic by shouting, "Bomb!"
